I bought this on eBay November 24, 2017. Even though it has been defaced, it's still a interesting item to own. One question I have is do they destroy it so nobody can use it for counterfeiting? Year is unknown and didn't come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Serial Number: P8 - 303915. It costed 25.00 with 4.99 shipping. Here's the link if you're interested in seeing seller's photo's. Used my crappy phone for pictures. This is a eduacational post and I don't know that much about the U.S. Mint on the cancellation process, so anybody that knows, feel free to chime in! https://www.ebay.com/itm/United-Sta....m2749.l2648

David, very interesting. I'm working on a paper about dies, defaced and all. Yours by the serial is a a smaller coin, but still unknown die, not sure of year/state. Yes they do deface them. Grinding like yours or torched and melted and in the case of the 95 olympics, just a big X.

BTW, that donut ring is THE COLLAR

Ya wonder why they didn't machine a flat on the dies so a set screw would prevent it from rotating!

I've seen that 1995 Olympics defaced die before somewhere, I think it was on eBay at some point. Maybe a Dime die? Who knows, but anyway it's very cool to own one. You have my permission to use my images or the images off of the eBay link (might have to ask the seller if it's okay to use his pictures). Should I post this in the "Coin Dies" thread? When you're finished with that paper, share it on here.

I wonder too! You would of thought by now that this wouldn't happen anymore, but it still does. I was surprised when I found that 1994 Lincoln cent with the rotated Die.

Because of the amount of high hydraulic pressure, there are adjustment rings that grip, but the =energy that is released at the strike would shear a tiny set screw after a couple whacks. Movement is necessary to release this energy in machining, heat would build up, and you know with anything mechanical, HEAT IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!

Think of it like I've described it before. A hammer hitting a nail bounces, releasing the downward pressures of energy as a rebound. A good carpenter knows how to harness that mini bounce and can sink a 16d nail in a 2x4 in three solid whacks...I was one, 8d roof sheeting in two... tap, WHAM!

Here's your answer Mark. Crazyb0, that's very interesting as I didn't know this at all. See, we learn new things everyday!

Nice purchase, E&V!

I've recently looked on eBay and you can find the die/coin sets for the 50 States quarters sold by the Mint. I've thought of buying one, but would prefer Texas and there wasn't one available at the time.

I found at least one die & collar set, too. I think it's a nice addition to any collection.

Thank you spruett001. It was nice finding one. I might buy another one sometime, but with the Certification of Authenticity. One of my best post I've ever done on here. :)

We don't see many die purchases floating around on CCF, that's for sure.

Now you just need the other die, collar and a press.

That's true. There's not many post about die purchases in general. It's a topic that's rarely brought up. I would love to buy a collar on eBay if there's any of them around. :)
