Determining Just How Many Classic Coins Are Still Around

jpsned Pillar of the Community United States 2216 Posts	Posted 01/04/2018 6:24 pm I was thinking about all the old coins we know and love, and looking at their mintages. Sure, the original mintages give us number of coins originally minted, but in the 100+ years these babies have been around, any of a number of things could have happened to them. They got lost, destroyed, removed from circulation, melted. And coin collectors have probably removed a good bunch from circulation so that they'll never see the light of day again. So do you know if it's possible to estimate how many of a certain mintage are still in existence, based on the original mintage and their age? I recall posting a similar musing years ago, and one person said there's a concept in accounting called "survivor analysis" that could be what I'm looking for. Anyone know more about this?
