Related question ... I haven’t seen many of the plain edge varieties of these coins turn up in the past few years. Has anyone seen any as of late?

We've seen a couple on eBay over the last maybe three years. Listed at double catalogue value though so ignored them. Would be cool to complete a set but only got 3 or 4 so far.

The Calgary '88 silver set still remains one of my favourites! Plain, simple, powerful.

I feel the same way about the '76 Olympics as well, now 42 years ago - I imagine that we will have a 50th anniversary set of the '76 games.

Love'em or hate'em, the 28 coin set of Olympic coins was a starting point for a lot of 'collectors'.

An interesting piece of history:

"The government announced on March 25, 1986, that the new [loon] dollar coin would be launched the following year as a replacement for the dollar bill, which would be phased out. It was expected to cost $31.8 million to produce the first 300 million coins, but through seigniorage (the difference between the cost of production and the coin's value), expected to make up to $40 million a year on the coins. From the proceeds, a total of $60 million over five years was dedicated toward funding the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary." - Wikipedia

The loon is a fundraiser and an inspiration to our athletes!
