To my eye, the IGC graded coins I own are every bit as nice as the PCGS and NGC examples of the same coins I own.

The grades ICG gives are not consistent. ICG does not nearly have the reputation of PCGS, NGC, and ANACS. When purchasing an ICG graded coin, make sure to follow the rule: buy the coin, not the holder (which should apply to any TPG). ICG commonly overgrades coins, so don't just go by the grade on the slab.

I rank ICG above ANACS. PCGS and NGC are the cream of the crop obviously with good reason, but then I rank ICG and then ANACS.

In terms the TPGs with PCGS/NGC excluded from the conversation ICGs grading is fine and has been more consistent than others

For run of the mill coins, they are fine. But when you get up into the high grades or top pops, they are not good.

Doesn't matter if they're reliable or not. People still won't pay PCGS or NGC prices for them.

They're better than the average collector, IMO, but tend to overgrade compared to the major TPGs.

I have a few coins graded by them. I think they do a fair job in most classic coins in the F-XF range.

To bring this back to ICG...

Who are they? This came up recently ATS when an old news article popped up on a readers feed and he posted it as new news. I won't repeat that, but it does beg the question... After all, all a TPG is really selling is their reputation.

The standard comment: Buy the coin, not the slab.
In other words "sight seen".
IMO SEGS and PCI also fit in that group.

I like their holder; it presents well. But I have found their grading is not as consistent as PCGS.
Much more affordable, fast turnaround, and gives some protection and decent display of a coin/medal/token that you're not so worried about $ aspect.

They are the only ones who will slab contemporary counterfeits in their bright yellow "Educational" label slab.

Not at all. I heard a saying that said: ICG stands for I Can't Grade.

You can make those up for all of them. It's one thing is someone says they just want PCGS/NGC only or one or the other, but if someone is fine with ANACS they should be fine with ICG too.

I don't even consider ICG coins. I see the label and move on. Same way I feel about ANACS blue holdered coins.

I think they are just fine for for coins under $300 (my guideline) and if you are not in a coin business.

Their grade might fluctuate a bit but I own several slabbed coins by ICG & PCI and they seem about right. Especially Morgans & Peace dollars by PCI that I had for many years.

If I had a choice between a raw coin and one of these 2nd tier TPGs slabbed coin, I would definitely take the slabbed one, provided that the prices are similar. (In many cases, they are)
