I had some free time today... Stopped by Hobby Lobby and bought 3 Harris Folders 1938-1961, 1962-1995, 1996-XXXX Then I stopped off at my bank and bought a box of nickels Fast Forward 3 hours... The 1938-1961 ended up with 17 coins in it. Grades are all over the place. The 58D is an VF which suprised me for a coin thats been in circulation for 50 years. The 1962-1995 is complete except for the 1971P. Mostly AU from 1980 on. VF-XF before that with a few VGs. The 1996-XXXX folder is complete except for the 2008P. Lots of BU, a few AU Found 3 silver nickels (1 44S and 2 43S) and found 4 Canadian nickels (1982, 1992, 2005, 2006) Took some quick pics Edited by SpringCypress 06/05/2008 7:27 pm

Nice finds! I might get my first box of nickels in the near future but I have a couple questions: -Do coin dealers buy common date early jeffersons for more than face value? -Do you find many nickels before 1965 in one box? Thanks, PP

There were tons and tons of 1964D's... but before that it was sparser than I thought it would be. Out of the 50 rolls I went through I found fewer than 30 nickels dated prior to 1964.
BUT I just did some reorganizing and HOLY COW...
2 or 3 months ago I bought 4 partial albums of Jeffersons from a local dealer for $3 each. I hadn't paid much attention to any of them but thought this would be a good time to go through and see what was in them.
Three of the albums were exactly what I thought they were. I was able to go through them and pull out several that I hadn't found today and place them in my new folders. Which was exciting for me. BUT THEN...
I opened up the 4th album and started looking at it. It's an old Library of Coins album dated 1938-XXXX with the last date in the album being 1960. I started noticing that there were several coins in incorrect holes, so I started poking them out. As I was poking them out I started to notice a trend. They were all either silver or dated prior to 1942. In total I knocked out 15, of those 4 were silver and the rest were mostly 42D's.
This album wasn't complete to begin with so now it was starting to look really holey. But as I was cleaning up the album I noticed that there were several UNC coins. I started to get REALLY excited...
Here are the ones that were in the album which I think will grade 63 or better 38P, 38S, 45P, 46S, 47D, 47S, 48S, 50P, 51S, 52S, 53S, 56P, 57P, 58P, 60P
I haven't ever put together a set of UNC Jeffersons, but after finding these I have a fairly strong suspicion that I know what set I'm going to start working on next!

Lol I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that is amazed how fast a set goes together from circulation on nickels. IMO jeffies are the easiest of any US coins for circulation.

Nope, not unless they are the common early date Jeffersons that contain silver

How many nickels are in the box? Do you have to pre order them from the bank?

1 box = 50 rolls 1 roll = 40 nickels 1 box = 2000 nickels
I didn't have to preorder... Just went up to the cashier and asked for a box.

most banks don't seem to mind unless your plan on doing it on a regular basis

Wow! You came up big on those early Jeffs! I just started my first set of jeffs from circ two days ago, and yeah, after going through only one box, it doesn't seem too hard to put a set together...although I did only get one silver (and a 38D...)
Time for box #2!

I was going to order some Harris folders and few coin tubes but s/h charges discouraged me. Bent Krugger charges about $8 from NJ to NY and even JPs Coner charges about $7. I don't know of any local dealers around. Are you ordering your supplies online or buying from local dealers?

I don't know if this counts as cheating, but I went to a dealer today.
He had a book of Jefferson's for sale for $3.00. It had the 1950P in it along with 63 other nickels. So for $3 I bought $3.20 worth of nickels in an album...
I then tore through his nickel box and was able to find the 38DS and 39S for $.25 each, the 39D for $.35, and the 71P for $.15. He didn't have and 50D's in the bargain box though so I picked up a VF one for $8.
Doing the math... $100 box of nickels bought -$94 nickels returned ------- $6 pulled from circulation +$15 spent on 5 partial albums -$10 of nickels still in partials ------ $5 from cherrypicking partial albums $9.25 spent on 6 coins from dealer inventory $9.75 for the 3 folders ------ Total = $31
So in the course of less than 24 hours I put a complete circulated set of Jefferson's together for $31. That's not too shabby I think.
