I will say that I think this variant is great. Prices for BIN 70's hanging in the $170-225 range. Just sent 11 more out for grading...we'll see. Much more lenient with these so I don't expect a repeat of the 14 70's out of 15 but will be happy with 5 or 6

Not me. I have tried to get excited about this variant, but I just don't like it. It looks like a substandard product to me, but that doesn't mean I don't want one. The completist in me says to add it. When I do get one it'll be a 69. Stopped buying 70 moderns a couple of years ago. Not going down that road again. So for me this coin = no big deal. Give me that full reverse proof effect.

Darth,

So what do you consider to be a "complete" Kennedy set? Does it need to have every die variety? or do you pick and choose?

For me, a complete set equals what's listed in the RedBook. So, if Whitman eventually lists it, then I'll add it to the want list to "complete" my Kennedy set.

I know that it's a bit lame to let Whitman, Dansco (or some other album provider) or a TPG registry tell us what a "complete" set is, but it seems that for many collectors that's the way it is.

I totally understand...any error/variant can be considered substandard because it is not how the product was intended...and this difference is also what makes it desirable by collectors.

Side by side they are two different beasts....Which looks better? The RP of course...but for price appreciation the "Light finish" is my set favorite

You can get a attributed ( NGC) 69 for $60-70 vs. $145-225 for a PF70

Basically, for me, combine the Red Book and Dansco, and that is the complete basic set. The reason I say this is because the Dansco doesn't include slots for the 1981-S Types 1 and 2..... WHY? They also don't include the 98-S matte proof or any other special finish Kennedy. I do not consider any DDO, TDO, QDR, or any other DDR as part of a complete set. Those are reserved for the complete variety set for specialists. Even though this light finish is more of an error, I still consider it part of a complete set, for me anyways.

Well, I haven't actually considered how different it looks compared to the normal RP. I was thinking it was just slightly different, not markedly so. Hmmmmmm. Dang you! Now you've piqued my interest, so I must look up comparison photos.

Neither do I, but then the RedBook included the 1974-D DDO Kennedy so, of course, I had to get one of those

Comparison photos, for your consideration (these are mine, from much earlier in this thread):

I agree -- the "light finish" one is relatively dull, not much contrast between the portrait and the field. If it were a variety in the sense of Type 1 & 2 mintmarks in 1979 and 1981, I'd actively want both in my set. This variety is just less attractive to me. The only reason I have both is because I accidentally ordered two on eBay from different sellers and they arrived on the same day. I didn't return the light one because the variety was still new at the time so we didn't know how broad it was or what kind of premium it would get.

It's worth noting/reminding that the reverse is the same on both, with the reverse proof quality one would expect. It's only the obverse that is affected.

Thanks for posting, Alpha. I looked up comparison photos earlier on the CU forum. Yes, the difference is considerable. Looks like my opinion on this variety is gonna change quite a bit. I'll certainly try to get one now, but I think I'll wait a bit for things to cool down. So this is essentially kind of like a "finish" mule. I guess I wasn't paying too much attention when this first got noticed because I don't recall reading about only the obverse being affected. This is a strange animal, indeed.

I going to try and hunt down both versions in PCGS holders with TrueViews.
