The AU58 (unattributed MPD FS-301) slipped through my hands on eBay (last year?), it was a beauty. I like the variety! PCGS has been pretty sloppy with their variety attribution as of late and it has been acknowledged by the "big wigs".

There is an unattributed MS64 at CollectorsCorner (JMS Coins) if anyone is interested. It's kinda spotty, but... http://www.collectorscorner.com/Pro...?id=34267198

I received my 1875 3CN MPD back from PCGS after the restoration. I put together a side-by-side, before/after restoration comparative sequel.

Here are the obverse differentiations:

I'd like some comments on the quality of workmanship by PCGS shown on this obverse side 'after' the restoration as well as what you think the grade should be on this post-restoration side.

We're only addressing the obverse side at this point so the grade would obviously not yet reflect any reverse side characteristics etc.

Here are the reverse comparisons:

I would also appreciate some additional feedback on the quality of work by PCGS displayed on this reverse side 'after' the restoration; also indicate what you think the grade should be on this post-restoration reverse side only.

Additionally, now you can give this restored coin an overall grade factoring in both sides together.

I'll reveal the 'new' end result grade from PCGS later on. They just sent me the photos but the coin is almost ready to be shipped. This has been an unbelievably long time to wait for this restoration.

The obverse looks much improved. There is notable strike weakness on the obverse with good luster, eye appeal and excellent surface preservation. 63 would be a conservative obverse only grade.

The reverse has improved luster but seems to have picked up (or relocated) some light staining. The reverse appearance is a before/after push. I see the reverse as a strong 63 as well.

The overall appearance is vastly improved in my eyes with the spot in the tiara and strike weakness possibly still holding it to 63 but it's a strong 63 for sure and at 64 it would not look overgraded to me.

First, I'm quite impressed with the restoration, at least for the obverse. The staining is almost completely removed, just couldn't remove the spot on the "T" in her ... tiara? A vast improvement. The reverse, I almost like the before picture better. The stain is more pronounced but also more isolated. In the after picture, it looks like it moved towards the center. If not for some telltale marks, I'd otherwise swear they were different coins.

As for grade, PCGS photograde is of very little help. I'm torn between 58 and 62. I see only a hint of what might be circulation rub on the obverse but the lines in "III" are clear, which would be what I look for in a piece. But some of the smaller leaves are not that strong. I'm just going to let others be more specific with their guesses and see what the real answer is.

Edit, after seeing BH1964's reply: I don't usually play "guess the grade". This is why.

I like it a lot more after the conservation.

My grade opinion is MS-63. 64 wouldn't be impossible for this one.

64 would be my opinion. If they could have gotten the reverse gunk more spread out like the obverse, I'd really be in love with it.

Interesting thanks for posting! I like the post obverse better, but the pre reverse; however, the post reverse color/luster matches the post obverse, even though the staining is more detracting

I hope you labeled the reverse's wrong. Otherwise it looks like they took the stains off the obverse and put them on the reverse.
