I have a gold-toned dime. Is this plated? Some type of chemical reaction from metals or other minerals? Novelty? Any insight?

Possibly plated but neither a variety or an error as it was done
after it left the mint.

Not an error at all. It's Post Strike Damage, since it happened after it left the U.S. Mint. It was plated.
