Opinions of grade on this 1858 Canada 20 cent coin. Cleaned? Legit? Or you guys think everything looks good and in raw form. Thanks!   |

Also MODS I have this in the professional graded coins section. Not sure if I can have it in two places so I apologize if I'm not supposed to. I just wasn't getting any hits in the other one. Thanks.

Your in the right forum now. That other forum is for questions on graded coins and TPG, not for grading. Hard to tell if it has been previously cleaned but I would give it a EF-40. Look like it has the re-engraved 5 as well. Edited by JimmyD

Right on guys. Please keep your opinions coming. It's a coin I've been thinking or purchasing. It is a graded slabbed coin, hence posting it in the other section previously. It came in at XF45. Thats it. No details or anything. But from my stand point, it looks like it might have been cleaned.
So here's a follow up question. Due to the age, if it was cleaned it looks like it was a light clean at least. You think the grading company factored in the age and severity of the clean and just decided to possibly accept it/ over look it?

If it's a graded PCGS coin it would not have a numeric grade on it if it was cleaned

Looks like a 40 to me and, if it was cleaned, light. I don't think the TPG lowered the grade at all .. there's actually some pretty good Obv wear. |

That is what my understanding was. It would have come up just as EF details- cleaned I think. But I thought I would post here and get an opinion about it. If a lightly cleaned coin would be overlooked in some cases due to age etc etc. Just all the little scuff marks on top of crown and on coin seemed a bit off to me. Although for sure many would be just from circulating, the crown part kind of grabbed my attention. Still a beautiful coin nonetheless.

Or is that what you meant OKIE about the TPG company lowering the grade. You get no details but one step down in grade because it would have been so minor? This may be my first higher grade, slabbed purchase ever so I'm trying to ask and understand as well I've been doing a lot of reading to also try and understand the process. As well, if there was something "off" about this coin, the guys and gals here would be a good set of eyes. :-). I'm more than willing to learn from others..... misfortunes I would say. I haven't even asked what you all feel fair market value to pay for this coin is. I know j&m has it $300 CAD. Coins and Canada also has it for $300CAD and trending down. Same coin, not graded, between VF and EF ( was advertised as EF) sold for $150CAD on ebay last night that I had been following. All these factors, what would be a fair offer? Edited by samsnate

I may be wrong as I don't deal with PCGS but I believe if a coin
has been cleaned, it would come back with a details designation.
OOPS-

PCGS would not assign a numeric grade on a problem coin, NGC does the same but ICCS will grade a cleaned coin with a number grade just to add more confusion

I do not think that PCGS lowered the grade at all. I would keep it in the current holder knowing, as Jimmy states, that PCGS does not grade problem coins and they most definitely would have put something in the remarks if they had any questions.... you're good. My personal opinion is that it looks 40 to me and PCGS did you a favor.

352420850845Wayyy overpriced. Full retail price should be about $260US EF40 by Canadian standards IMO. Just because a coin has received a straight grade from PCGS does not mean it has never been cleaned. Old cleanings when not harshly done can be acceptable.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...
