I picked up a change purse filled with wheaties at a yard sale a couple days back. Upon searching them this morning, it turned out about 95% were very ordinary 1940's & 50's types (although about a dozen of those were AU/UNC). I guess if under those circumstances you're going to have an outlier, short of really lucking into a 1909-S VDB or a 1914-D, a 1913-S isn't too bad an issue to come across.

This coin appears to have been struck on very worn dies. As such the actual wear on the piece is far less than the devices indicate a la 1922-D.

I'm not sure why that might seem odd. That's what they were stored in, and I wasn't about to pour them out and stuff them in my pockets! And actually it was convenient for me to put the several other coins I bought there in it for transporting everything home.

Great score! That's the latest obverse die state I've ever seen on one.

VG-10, nearly F12.

BH1964 hit it right on the head. Optimal die spacing with worn dies. Visually a VG. Actual wear is probably closer to ef40. though it would never grade that way.
