Started with a small budget and took to ebay and a local coin deal. Ended up with a 1909s ms64rb Indian cent, 1937d 3 leg au55 buffalo, 1921 ms64 Peace dollar, 1912 gold Indian 5c and a 1872 au50bn Indian cent to start this adventure off.
I'm interested in any advice on my starter collection and I'm also looking to add more. I'm digging all things old and Indian at the moment. There's just so much to learn, so keeping Things in that genre should help. Plus Indians are just cool! (:

To CCF , Chip , you certainly started coin collecting with top of the line coins . Most newbies start out low key like circulated wheat cents and Jefferson nickels . But hey ,as long as you have a healthy budget than have fun .
There's only one thing I should caution you about and that's the ever increasing problem we face with counterfeit coins and now TPG slabs . So before you invest any more of your hard earned money I would recommend buying and reading up on how to detect counterfeits .
I'm only saying this because you are new into this hobby and need to learn the ropes . I've put in 55 years and I still learn something new every time I log onto CCF.

Thanks for the info. I've spent so much time trying to learn what coins to collect and how to identify some key dates without putting any thought to identify fakes. I just assumed that as long as I bought slabed stuff from PCGS or ncg I would be safe. And yeah I think I did start off a bit to strong with my first buy ever being $1800 for that 1909-s ms64rb Indian cent. I'll have to take that as my first lesson learned. Having 5-10 lesser coins would have been more enjoyable at this point.

Welcome Chip, that certainly is unusual and interesting to jump right in to the high end first go, but it might be a very good thing and a sign of wisdom.

As people become more experienced collectors, they tend to want to upgrade coins and dispose of the lower quality ones they acquired early on. You've sidestepped this inefficient way of collecting by following the oft-repeated advice to buy the best coin you can afford. So props to you for sure on that.

You are pretty much safe if you buy PCGS and NGC slabbed from a good source (don't buy these slabbed coins from China, for example, but domestic sales are usually good).

Chip Schleichard,
You typed NCG,that one would be suspicious. Post good photos of the stuff you bought in the proper sections and we will help you with ID.

New-Guy-Jumping-In-Head-First.

Here's a pic of the 09-s my first purchase.
I think I'm doing it right anyways.

Oh and I ment NGC not ncg.. I have the apps on my phone to look up the serial numbers before I buy anything.
