AureusStone New Member Australia 2 Posts	Posted 02/08/2019 05:57 am Hi. I have this coin that has been soaking for years. I am trying to remove the dirt. The dirt is coming off pretty easy, but no patina under the dirt. I have only cleaned 2 other coins, mostly keeping the patina on those. Is this coin bronze? Am I doing something wrong? Using bamboo skewer + toothbrush to remove dirt at the moment. Thanks. Report this Post to the Staff

This coin is bronze and it doesn't sound like you have done anything wrong. Sometimes the patina is too weak to survive cleaning, even if you are careful. The only way to have retained it would have been manual-only cleaning which would have been very time consuming. Not too much of an issue here, I think - looks like the patina was thin and there is plenty of detail left and no real porosity. Once you have cleaned it fully, you can throw it in some fresh olive oil and leave it for a while to darken. Report this Post to the Staff
