American Numismatic Society - One of our most exquisite coins is Adolph Weinman's 1916 Winged Liberty dime, which has been discussed extensively in numismatic periodicals throughout the years. Nevertheless, no one has thoroughly analyzed the creative motivation behind Weinman's famous coin. Veteran numismatic author Eric Brothers contends that this coin's inspiration is entirely French, with its Winged Liberty based on Oscar Roty's medallic creations. Like the obverse design, the fasces pattern on the reverse came from numerous French coins and medals featuring that antiquated Roman emblem. Brothers' piece about Weinman's half dollar in ANS Magazine last year won him a Numismatic Literary Guild Award in 2025.
