I have a collection of World War I-vintage coins and banknotes, mostly from France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Belgium. They were the souvenir collection of an American soldier who served 1918-19. I want to liquidate the collection. I could simply auction each on eBay or...

Package each coin/banknote along with a copy of the soldier's regimental scrapbook, which is a modern, glossy reprint of the original 1919 softcover document. It is a nicely assembled collection of photos, maps, sketches, and narrative text that summarizes the unit's actions from training, through the war, and their final rotation home. My cost to reproduce the document is negligible; I would price each package based on the coin/banknote value only.

Coin collectors will either love it or hate it. YOUR thoughts, please.

Unless you need money real bad, if it was me, I'd try to donate all that to a museum.

A museum is the last place I would ever donate anything too. Most of them have storage rooms full of donated stuff they have no room for and most of the stuff donated to them just sits there never to be seen again by anyone who doesn't work there

Having a story to go with an item of historical value is always a good thing. Especially for many collectors. I don't see a downside to adding the journal.

I was thinking that you might get more if you sold the whole collection together, with the journal, at a WWI auction. Having the story and all of the pieces can demand a nice premium.

And much of it either eventually "evaporates" out the back door, or gets sold off anywhay by the museum to use the money raised for other things that they do want.

I'm considering this, as well as a variation: bundle several coins with a journal, then do the same with banknotes. So many permutations... fortunately, I'm in no rush with this. Thanks for the feedback.
