Aside from your regular collecting, do you have a favorite "Theme" for a sub set? When I was 7, my parents took me to my first rodeo. They released a whole herd of Buffalo into the ring. My lifelong love of the American Bison was born. Now this may not be a big deal if I lived in the great plains states, but I live on the gulf coast!(I still think the bison should have been our national symbol)

Of course when I got into coin collecting, it was the old Buffalo nickel that got me started. I have many diverse sets working, but make a new coin with a buffalo on it and everything else gets put on hold. I get special holders and fill them with everything from that issue, mint D&P, proof, silver proof when available. 2005 nickel, State Quarters from Kansas, North Dakota, Montana, yellowstone park quarter. I even have silver rounds made like the original nickel and a russian coin with buffalo on it.

So do you have a theme obsession?

Really never gave that a thought. I have no real favorite in coins and I just collect what I like at the time. Might be the Mercury dime though but only because I like them a bit better than others but nothing to do with a theme. I too like the Buffalo nickel and sort of wish they had called them that and not the Indian Head Nickel. Just never thought of having a theme for coins.

My wife loves animals to the point of obsession. She has a hard time understanding why I am so into classic American coins. So I buy her animal coins from around the world so she can have her own collection. There is a great topic on this forum where people post their coins representing the animal kingdom that gives me seemingly limitless ideas.

Last year I started collecting soccer themed coins and banknotes. Given that the sport is played worldwide, it seems like almost every country has issued as least one soccer coin. The current goal is to have at least one example of a coin issued by the World Cup host country.

I've thought about collecting turtle coins and banknotes, but haven't started yet. It's may favourite animal and there seems to be a lot of nice examples in numismatics.

Saints.

Though I'm gonna step back a bit from calling it an obsession. I prefer "passion."

And I'm not sure what you mean by "aside from your regular collecting." I have a couple of themes, and no "regular collecting."

I was referring to say set collecting. Example, I have a full set of Jefferson nickels, Eisenhower dollars, working on roosevelt and Mercury dime sets. The buffalo sub set doesn't matter what coin or denomination it is, as long as it has a bison, it goes in!

Got it. That makes sense.
I no longer collect any U.S. series, so all of my collection is various "themes" that cut across normal series (birthyear, saints, etc.). That may be more typical of World Coin collectors (for example, thaler collectors)

This is an area I am interested in but have not started. Do you have any posts showing these? I would be interested.

I have a number of theme sets on the go, comprised of world coins. Mostly I try to stick with coins intended for circulation. Some of my sets are pretty much completed, others are still growing. I don't know exactly why I have chosen some of the themes - it just happens. You get a few similar ones and then your on to something. In no particular order, I have coins depicting: tractors, rabbits, radio communication, orbits, oil (pumps, derricks, platforms, etc), nuclear, and coins with latent images. Also I have some other themes in mind to collect in the future.

I thought I had a thread from last year with this as the topic, but I could not get it to show up in a search.

It kills me that I see so many Canadian coins with bison on them, but the prices are way out of my price range. :(
