I inherited a collection of many coins from an uncle that died about 45 years ago. I am just starting to look it over and I am overwhelmed. There are thousands of coins. They are not organized. Does anyone have any suggestions?

okay I would say depends on your level of collecting really

For a total beginner I would say first figure which ones look to be valuable I guess, I mean it will depend on there dates really. How well with time. Some people like sort via type, dates, countries, there no wrong way to sort.

However DONT clean coins until you understand how to do it properly as clean coins, will reduce the value of the coins.

Are these US coins? Foreign coins? A combination? Let's start with the basics.

It can be daunting, but remember it doesn't have to happen all at once. Go slow and have fun learning. And to CCF!

If you are new to coins in general then this is what you do : First store them in a clean dry area covered from dust and dirt . Then go to a coin shop or book store and pick up the official Red Book ,a guide book of United States coins. new 2019 edition . This book will give you all the information you'll need for those coins . Just don't rely to heavily on the prices they give for every coin as they are inflated on the high side but will give you ball park figures . Then go ahead and start your sorting out and holdering those coins if they haven't been done already . As previously mentioned ; DO NOT clean any of your coins .Post photos of any one that is dirty and we will inform you how to take care of it . Also before placing the coins in holders you have to decide if you want them in Albums or plastic coin sheets that go into loose leaf binders or just store your coins in boxes made for 2x2 holders . This may all sound very confusing to you ,but just stay with us and you'll be fine .

OK
Devide by country.
devide by amount. penny nickel dime half dollar
devide by date. US 1964 and older silver or newer copper center.

I used pill bottles because we have a lot.
some people use zip lock bags in shoe boxes.
I also bought 20 pocket coin pages with 2x2 folds for the good stuff.

enjoy and take your time.
