It seems the first listing for a PCGS graded example of the first issue of 2019 w quarters is up on ebay. Its graded at MS-64, but looks absolutely atrocious with heavy contact marks all over the obverse including some rim marks on the top of washington's head. If I sent a Morgan in to be graded that looked like that it would come back at a MS-62.

Very surprised that obtained a MS-64, like above, if I sent any coin in like that it would never come back as a 64.

Yeah, I saw it. My opinion, it's not that they are "overgrading" as a rule, I think there is a certain amount of favoritism for the first finders to get better grades than they are worth for the PR and the hype.

NGC graded the one the actor found and submitted to them MS67 and I guarantee you it isn't an MS67, but it will get it so they can claim they have the better example graded over PCGS,

I think these first coins are going to be overgraded, but to be fair, one side of the coin is unique to the type, unlike Morgan dollars that have the same obverse and reverse for years. The quarters reverse (I think) are harder to grade for strike unless it's really bad or they have good ones to weight it against.

I was thinking the same thing though, If that's an MS64, then I've been throwing back a lot of MS65-66-67-68 because of very minor nicks or minting marks that I though would put it below 62.

I think it's a sliding scale with these new coins with unique reverses and they make it up as they go along.

"I've been throwing back a lot of MS65-66-67-68", I'm hoping these are not 2019 W's your throwing back. They're going for like $40 a piece right now on ebay raw. I suspect a MS 67 might go for at least hundreds of dollars if not more, that's likely the top pop coin I suspect and there will be multiple registry set people trying to get their hands on it.

Comparing it to Morgans is apples and oranges. That coin is is fine, 64 is not a good grade for ultra moderns even circulating ones. Generally anything less than 66 with ultramoderns is a terrible grade. ATB and State Quarters the design side is the one weighed more heavily as well.

No there isn't. People need to stop pushing these grading favoritism conspiracy theories. 64 is a terrible grade for ATB Quarters. Even for the Lowell W 64 is on the low end of the grades and means basically the W is what is giving it it's value

I'd prefer to see the OP's linked piece as a MS63 but don't see MS64 as totally out of line. The reverse is very nice and the obverse has significant contact marks but retains great luster and is well struck.

Remember, the mint MIXED THE W COINS INTO BAGS for distribution. If you use a shovel, why are you surprised at lots of bag marks...
