Hey Guys! I noticed in my Susan B. & Ike book..there are rooms for "V1 V2" etc. for various years. What exactly are the differences? I can't seem to find any good info :o.
Thanks!

For the Eisenhower dollars:
  • 1972: there are three varieties from the Philly mint, you can read about them here and here.

  • 1976: for all mints (except the 40% silver issues), there are two varieties on the reverse. The first having a more bold blocky font, the second having a thinner serifed font. I cannot find a good link for these.

For the Anthony Dollars, I am not as well versed on these, so someone might correct me if I am wrong:
  • 1979: There is a near-date/far-date variety; there are two varieties for the "S" mint as well (filled-S and somewhat-clear-S). Read more about it here.

  • 1981: There are two varieties for the "S" mint, filled-S and clear-S. It should be noted that the 1979 somewhat-clear-s is the 1981 filled-s (see link above).

i thought that I read somewhere that these varities also exist for the silver issues except that they are extremly rare, or maybe I'm just daydreaming again.

I would not be surprised if one existed; no different than a Silver 1971 Kennedy half or the Copper 1943 cent.

It is not an official variety. By that I mean that there is no labeled hole for them in the Dansco. Then again, the Dansco only has the one 1972 hole, not three!

Now you have me looking!

Here is a link for the 1976 Variety I v. Variety II.

Xavier, on that page is this bit of information:

Quote:
The silver versions, both proof and BU, were made for special 3-piece sets of bicentennial coinage (also including the dual-date bicentennial quarter and half dollar). While they were sold by the Mint well into the 1980s, the entire production was minted in 1975 and thus all are Type I.

interesting, I did find out that their is at least one type two silver piece for 76. Its listed in the RedBook but no price or mintage is given. From the information ive seen its a proof struck in phili on a silver planchet found in 1977. Perhaps it was a presentation piece that somehow slipped outof the mint?
I cant seem to find any other information except whats listed here -

Interesting! The link does not seem to indicate if the "presentation" pieces (sans-mint mark) were Variety I or Variety II though. But still, I think anything is possible. The plot thickens, the search continues!

The Authoritative Reference of Eisenhower dollars by Wexler, Crawford and Flynn state that in David Bowers Silver Dollar book two 1976d type 2 silver clad dollars had been verified. One by James Sego. So I guess there is a chance of another being out there. Worth keeping an eye out for it.
