Hi. If you have been reading the 65 days of copper part 4 http://goccf.com/t/343784) thread, you will see that the frog had a question about the color on my '45 Large Cent. I paid just under $13 for this back in 2001 (most likely on eBay) and never questioned its authenticity. Admittedly, I was a lot less knowledgeable about coins back then and did unintentionally pick up a coin or two which now reside in my black cabinet.

Please see below for pics of this coin on both white and black backgrounds. My cheap USB camera clearly is not very faithful with duplicating the color. In hand it is a very dark brown with what I would now call a little "sand patina" around some of the devices. Additional information on this coin is that it is 27 mm and 10.5 g, which is admittedly a little low, but (to me anyways) not unreasonably low.

Anyone with thoughts now seeing both sets of pics?

The weight doesn't concern me. The diameter I am a little worried about. Did you measure it along more than one axis>

That crud is reminiscent of a couple of large cents I've seen with paint on them. If you haven't, you might soak it in acetone or even paint thinner (although I'm not sure if paint thinner is safe?).

Thx for the input @jc. I just remeasured this coin along the 3/9 o'clock axis (27.3 mm) and the 6/12 o'clock axis (27.3 mm). To the best of my measuring ability this coin is round.

I continue to feel that the overall appearance of this coin does not look natural.

Color? Mushiness of details? AT? Don't be afraid to call my baby ugly. I know that many of my US coins are in pretty dismal shape. If this is a fake, I just want to make sure that I'm calling it what it is. Thx!

I don't see what the problem is. Why would anyone counterfeit this coin in that condition? It is genuine in my book, but with issues.

I too think it's OK. Just not a great coin.

Not the best looking coin but nothing jumps out to say fake.

Ok thanks folks. @cf, I'd love to have a little more info from you about the unnatural look. Not judging, just trying to learn. Thx!

I must concur with Sruett001, why would it be counterfeited? Looks normal to me. I think you did fine buying it.

Looks genuine to me. Here's a before/after of one of my coins that may have a similar issue, but I'm no expert. As we are working through the 65 Days of Copper I found some coins to experiment with.

For this one I did soaks in Acetone and Xylene and then Verdi-Care. I think it has improved the look a bit.

Awesome thx!

If I decide to give it either an acetone or Verdi-Care bath, I'll post some "after" pics of my own.

do I see repunching on the 1? It is a longshot, but it is worth checking the date under your scope. We probably have the same USB camera, too, so I bet it can do ok with zoomed in pics.

Here you go. A cleaner coin would help, but I don't see much repunching.
