I bought a sealed 1961 proof set and removed the Franklin half, Washington quarter and Lincoln Cent from the cello. Though not very experienced in coins I never have seen this type of gold toning on proof coins. Is this a common occurrence or is this something unusual? Thanks for your expert opinions.

The toning on the Franklin and Lincoln looks fairly average, but the Washington quarter seems to have sustained some environmental damage. The cellophane used on the proof sets in the 50s and early 60s can develop small holes or tears over time. If the set if left in a high heat or high humidity environment, the coins exposed to the atmosphere can experience damage.

Two of the coins pictured are 90% silver, a metal which is highly susceptible to toning. As is the copper cent. That being said, you did good by removing them from the mylar packaging which hardens and eventually scuffs the coins. Never, ever, touch them un-gloved. Edges only if you must. Otherwise spots will appear and ruin them.

Too bad about the quarter, that's a goner.
