Hi, I found this in a roll of nickels yesterday, and wondering first if it's a proof, and secondly, how do you tell the difference? I think I read that it's in the finish, but it's really hard for me. Maybe after I've looked at thousands I'll be able to spot them, but for now, I have to ask, sorry! It definitely stood out from the rest, and I thought maybe it's a proof coin. Am I correct? Thanks

It is a proof, impaired proof to be precise. Proof coins have a stronger strike and squared off rims. The newer coins will have a cameo look to them, the older ones will not and are called brilliant proof.

Yes, I agree, it's a fun find! Going through so many that are nothing special, it's nice to find something different, especially when it really shines above the rest. I'm happy with it &

Catracks, another giveaway that this particular coin is a proof is the S mint mark. All of the S mint marked nickels were proof in 1984.

Basically any nickel after 1970 with an S mintmark is a guaranteed proof. The mirrored fields and cameo finish help distinguish it from a standard business strike. Nice job finding one in the wild!
