The Black Widow spider of North America is a closely related species, and some BW's even have a faint red stripe on the back.
Red Back spiders are common in dry places around my house in Sydney, but I don't bother with them, unless their rather tangled web (and thus the spider), is in a potentially dangerous location.
Both species are potentially dangerous to human life.
I was bitten by a funnel web spider many years ago, and that required immediate transport to hospital. Their venom is neuro toxic, can be fatal without anti-venene treatment. My kid brother said that I didn;t have any brains, and that is why I survived. I have two tiny tattoo marks on a knuckle of my left hand to prove my experience.
Quote: This one is pretty rare but is there much demand for them?
If you followed the link to eBay, and played around a bit with search options, you saw that in the last 5 weeks, 4 of these sold, all at a price in the vicinity of $500. Only one that was offered in this price range did not sell.
TO me, this indicates a healthy supply-demand balance (from a seller viewpoint) at this price point.
