I just came across this coin and I have never seen this before. Did NGC straight grade this coin from the SS Republic? or is this a fake slab? I did check the cert number and it is listed!

It's the real deal. A small amount of recovered halves were found to have no evidence of saltwater corrosion and thus received straight grades from NGC.

Looks to me that it should have been graded at least MS-62 with possibility of a 63 .

PCGS says this is a $750 coin and the seller APMEX is asking ten times that. Usually they're high, but not that high. Am I missing something? Does an SS Republic recovered coin have an extraordinary premium?

Yes. Any recovered coins from famous collections, hoards, or ship wreaks almost always bring significant premiums. Although 10X is way over normal for pedigree bonus.

Yes they do tend to bring a premium, in my opinion an excessive premium, but this coin is special. Almost ALL of the SS Republic coins you will see show evidence of saltwater corrosion and the result of harsh cleaning to remove the corrosion and deposits (often looking like a wire brush or brillo pad has been taken to them, hence the reason I think the premiums are excessive. If they weren't SS Republic you would be lucky to get $50 for them even with near MS sharpness.) But this coin seems to have escaped that fate (though I still think in the image it looks cleaned)
