...I guess this thread would be the best place to ask: I have a weird Hungarian denar (?) dated 1625, which appears to be almost exactly half the expected weight (0.29 grams), with corresponding diameter (12 mm).
The coin might possibly be slightly clipped (probably not, but it's hard to tell), but even if it is, it's nowhere near enough to account for that much weight loss. The design is certainly small enough to expect that it might have been supposed to be that tiny.
Any idea what might be going on with that coin? I thought it might have been an obulus, but apparently that type has a completely different design for that year.
(Photos incoming later - I have apparently forgot to take a pic of one of the sides.)

I have a 1625 that is very misshapen and the design barely fits on it but thicker than normal

Interesting that denars were still struck to the late 17th century in Hungary. In Poland, I think the last denars and 2-denar coins were struck in the 1620s. Though the Saxon heller (I think a similar denomination?) was used again in the early 1700s when the Electors of Saxony were also Kings of Poland.

I think they were struck until the mid 1700's.

1. 1603 K-B Hungarian Denar under King Rudolph II;Huszar 1060,Unger 812,KM-16. It is very double struck making the date almost appear as 603. 2. 1602 K-B Hungarian Denar under King Rudolph II;Huszar 1059;Unger 811a. I guess this will be it until Covid-19 is over.
