Not in the greatest of condition, and holed. But it makes a nice addition to my Spanish Colonial collection. 26.99 g From Numista: "Emergency issue consisting of foreign silver coins, usually Spanish Colonial, having a bust of George III within an oval (1797) or octagonal (1804) frame. Countermarked 8 Reales circulated at 4 Shillings 9 Pence in 1797 and 5 Shillings in 1804. The puncheons used for countermarking foreign coins for this series were available for many years afterward, especially the oval die and apparently a number of foreign coins other than Spanish or Spanish Colonial 8 Reales were countermarked for collectors." https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces27971.html Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Countermarks can be interesting to collect. I think there are specialty books for them. I have one on an Azores coin, but Brazil is more interesting to me. One coin has a counterfeit countermark on a genuine coin. Another has a legitimate countermark on a counterfeit coin. On this Azores coin is a known documented false countermark.

Albert, excellent coin! And I agree - counterstamped coins are quite interesting! I have a few Morelos counterstamped SUDs from the Mexican War of Independence, but that's for a different topic.

The hole is curious as, from the positioning, a cancellation hole might be suspected. However, host and stamp both look good.
Maybe someone got spooked by a weird stamp they didn't recognize... or it was otherwise withdrawn?

realeswatcher, you've forgotten more about Spanish Colonials than I know. Yes, the hole is strangely placed. Was it holed before or after the CS? Who knows? From my readings, these CS 8 reales were not especially well-received by the British populace, as well as widespread counterfeiting of the counterstamps. These factors led the Soho Mint to totally overstrike the Spanish Dollars with the Bank of England design.

Nice coin Hondo! The stamp looks good to me but I am certainly not a specialist. I have a questionable octagonal stamp dollar with a similar hole. XRF showed trace gold and the SG is good, but the stamp is potentially counterfeit per discussion with swamperbob. The hole is in a non jewelry spot like yours. I found one other example on Worthpoint too - see below. I haven't heard a good explanation yet why a good dollar would be cancelled at the time - for the octagonal issue, false stamped dollars could be redeemed for 4 shillings 8 pence by a firm called Binns and Woods (Spanish Dollars and Silver Tokens, page 59). So at least for mine the answer could be someone using a stamp to make a coin for collectors.

threefifty, thanks for the info! I'd be interested in seeing your coin's counterstamp.

Here it is. I had posted about it previously in the Keyhole/Porthole discussion thread a couple of years ago and had a chance to buy it afterward.

That counterstamp does look a bit rough, threefifty. I zoomed in on mine, and this is the best my phone would do.
