I found this one today, thought I'd share. The G in Gratia is closed up. It looks more like a 6. The picture is a normal 1900 H Cent on top. Any ideas?

Maybe someone began to hole it and it pushed the metal up?

Quite possible. Not sure how else it could have happened. I don't see any disturbance in the field inside the G like a drill bit nick but if they stopped at just the right time.....presto.

It would show more tapering if it had been drilled and the sides would be smooth and not textured like that... looks more like a break of some kind to me... far from an expert but I have drilled a LOT of holes in metal :)

After looking at it some more I agree. The ridge is not tapered, the field inside is flat. I wish I had a microscope camera in this case. I have seen smeared letters before do some funky things...maybe this is a case of that...dunno.
