Hi, I was wondering if somebody knew what was the original holder/case for the 1942-1943 5 cents in specimen. I think there was a specific holder for those coins since the toning pattern is usually similar, especially for 1942. Heritage mentioned a purple pocket whit the canadian coat-of-arms and a member here (Apitrix) mentioned a red enveloppe...

I recently bought the 1942 Belzberg exemple (what a coin !) and I was curious to know the origin of the nice toning pattern, especially on the reverse.

Thank you and have a nice day !

Really hard to take a decent picture of a coin whit the stock lense ...

You can see the really special obverse field texture, full of polished/smoothed die mark. The obverse, whit the deep mirror field combined whit the full cameo/cartwheel luster create a really stunning cameo effect, the kind of coin you can examine for hours !

Beautiful piece..these coins fall victim to strange discoloration and toning due to their heavy lacquer which wasn't always applied very well. Apitrix does have the original red envelope..I saw it..very neat piece. The 2 1943s you likely read about with a special case were from J.H. Campbell, the Ex Mint master..that case was specially made for him and is one of a kind. Congrats on a very special coin!

Edit to ask: did you pick up anything else from the Mossman Collection? I really wanted to go for the 1942 but I had my eye on the 1939 SP66 25c and 1946 SP67 Norweb half..I'm glad it went to you though and that at the end of it all I didn't have any part in bidding you up

Congrats on the beautiful piece!

My 1942 when purchased, came with the original packaging that J H Campbell received it from the mint in. It was a red envelope which appeared to have somewhat of a wax lining on the inside, if memory serves me correctly. Both pieces are tucked away where I am unable to get to them at this time, but when I get the opportunity, I will try and show you!

Yeah, I would really love to see it Apitrix !

Dollarman : I also got the 1937 sp set mirror (the one whit the red cent), the 1872H specimen 25 cents, the belzberg 1951 comm and 1947ml 5c exemple and few others. my project was to buy also the 1943 but the price jumped way above my estimate... At least I know now they are not cheap !
