So can anyone tell me much about these early toonies? Where did the 10 million go?. I imagine that most were circulated beyond recognition? Did any come in a set that you know of? I think I have a unc example but I want to know more. :)

These are in the original mint protective cover so it;s hard to get a good shot of the brushed metal.

That's a specimen strike - not a German planchet. All German planchets were struck in Winnipeg as business strikes. There is a good article on this in the CN Journal, which you can access online if you are an RCNA member, October 2013 issue.

Ok..Good to know. Why does it say uncirculated $2 coin on the cover? It should say specimen should it not?

I found out more info..it is listed as Brilliant Finish and Frosted relief on a lien textured background. :) cheers!

Hmmmmmm..I just had this response and he mentions that the German ones were found in these earlist sets of 1996 so the jury is still out..My toonie does seem more matte then the greasy look of the others
