I am wondering about the marks on the edge on right side above 1978. Also is the D an error? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thank you

No errors, just PMD.
What you have is just damage from contact on the rim and MM.
There is no way that could happen during the striking of the coin.

Post Mint Damage. A well-circulated coin with characteristic dings accumulated over many, many years.

Just damage this time, but keep on hunting! You never know what the next one will be.

Post mint damage to the rim. Also about that D, it's not an error, but occasionally mintmarks can be slightly rotated or misaligned. Prior to 1985, they were all hand punched into the master dies. Slight discrepancies like this can occur, but rarely (unless extreme enough) do they demand a premium.
