I was a little surprised to see the difference in location of the mint mark on these pennies. I have several of them and they all look like the second image (further away, spaced between the 9 and 4) except this one penny (first image). I'm wondering if this is a common example. I would be curious to know what you all think.

to CCF. Mint marks were hand punched on each working die until 1990 when the mint mark was added to the master die. Pre 1990 coin the mint mark can vary,yours is within mint tolerance.

I believe it was actually 1985 when mintmarks were added to the master dies, but regardless, it still explains that. Hand punched mintmarks can vary in position ever so slightly. They rarely command an extreme premium but in some extreme cases they can, and have

1990 is when the mint started adding the mint mark to master dies. Check any of the three references sites on RPM's and you will see RPM's in 1985-1989. None starting in 1990.
