Hi everyone. So I recently purchased a lot of Proof Sets. I wanted to know what the "highest and best use" for this lot would be? In other words, what would YOU do with this collection? Break them open, sell them, keep them as is, etc... I purchased them as is, no boxes, or COA letters, etc. All the sets except for one are missing the plastic stand / cover part (not sure what its called). Not sure if it would be worth it or practical to try and find boxes and those stand parts to make it a more properly completed set? For what its worth I paid $94 for the entire lot. Thanks for any thoughts!

Also I didn't mention the specific dates: 1959, 1963, 1964, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972 (2), 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976 (3), 1977, 1978, 1979, 1983, 1992.
The 1964 set has a few holes in the packaging so those coins have been compromised a bit with some toning/staining.

Check for errors (no "S"), doubling, etc.
....and it looks like you started a proof set collection! :)

The 1979 set is work checking for Type 2 mint marks.

The stands for the 1973 through 1982 sets are available on line. I received a proof set with a broken part on the stand, and after an inexpensive order, I now have spares of those. As for breaking up the sets, that is something I have not done with proof coin sets from the mint.

Why did you get them? Do you collect proof sets or do you want to profit from a re-sale? Personally I would want to get rid of them quickly as I have all that I want, and don't want to spend a lot of time on them. However, I don't see that as relevant for what you want. To determine maximum resale value, check ebay see what each set sells for vs the coins individually. To sell each coin individually would probably take some time.

I got them at an auction. Seemed to be a good deal. I wasn't planning on buying this type of lot so I don't have a clear idea of what's the best use for me yet. Curious what others would do with them I guess.

I'd probably crack them for albums. I don't think you're going to make much money trying to sell them.

Would keep them for a while as a part of collection.

I just finished buying every proof set that my LCS carries (1955-2019). I busted them open and put them in my Danscos. I felt bad at first cracking them open, but I get more satisfaction looking at them in the blue books. If anyone is interested, I've found the best way to open them is with my bench vise. Just a little side pressure and the top wants to pop off. Much easier and safer than trying to run a knife or small screw driver down the edge. Just my $0.02 Jon

Given that they dont have all the OGP then they would be destined for Dansco albums, 2x2s into my general collection or resale.

If you don't already have a run on these sets going I'd keep them as is. Judging from the photos they look very pleasing on the eye so for what you paid, not a bad deal. Another option to add to Erscolo's recommendation for the stands, the original boxes/packaging are also plentiful for a reasonable price. If you plan on selling them, as is, expect between 5-8 on average per set. A bit more if the mentioned varieties exist.

If you don't want to save them to collect, I say break them open and sell as individual proofs. The 1959 and 1963 sets have some silver in them, they would go for about $20 each set.
