I've also seen pitting like this ( not quite to this extreme) when something has been soldered. Run across a number of 1916 D Mercs and 32 D Washington's that have pitted surfaces from added mintmarks. Heating a coin to point of metal to flow will cause any number of surface issues. While I agree with use as jewelry, heat would have caused a rainbow effect.
