I have a 1834 large cent. Under magnification it seems to have a small 8. Large stars. And large letters but I can't find one that matches mine. The "E" in amErica lines up straight across from the "one"(almost). All others are dropped well below the "one".

You have an 1834 N-1, Small 8, large stars, small (or medium) letters. (There are only two letter sizes for the year Large, and either small or medium. It gets confusing because there are only two letter sizes which would normally make it large ans small, but the small letter are the same size as what are called Medium in other years.)

Your method of using the line across the bottom of ONE doesn't work because there are 7 different rverse dies that year, two with large letters and 5 with small and all of them had the letters punched intothe die by hand so the positions vary.

I don't even bother with the letter sizes, there are easier ways to tell the varieties apart. If the point of leaf is just about or right below the right edge of S2, AND star 6 is well right of the point of the coronet then it is a large letter. Anything else is small letter. And if you DO have a large letter rev, look at the point of leaf below C in AMERICA. If it is pasr the cent of the C do the happy dance, you have a N-7. A proof only variety of which there are only 8 known.
