One thing missing in my collection is a US coin dated prior to 1800 - i.e., 179x. I've always thought my best bet was the 1798 Large Cent, especially given a reasonable budget of $200-300. An added bonus would be it could go in my 7070.

But what other options might there be? Something silver 179x would also very cool but I don't know if that's a realistic option in terms of budget. If the budget stretched to $400-500, is there anything out there that might be obtainable for that price? It would be tough to go much over that right now.

Finally, what's a decent grade to shoot for in any of these choices?

Guessing a nice G-06 1798 cent would be the least expensive, others will know more.

You might be able to find a low grade 1798 bust dime in that price range, but I think a nice 1798 large cent would be much more appealing. I would aim for an attractive, raw F-VF example, especially if it's going into your 7070.

I see 1795 halves for as low as $600 right now. I occasionally even see Bust Dollars that low.

You should be able to get a F-12 large cent for under $300.
There are some varieties that go for that.

Looking at the suggested budget of $200 - $300, I agree with Coinfrog. Look for something around Good 6 with as few planchet eye appeal problems as possible. I suggest if you can find a coin in this grade with few if any "distractions" for the grade, try to get one that's more chocolate brown than black.

For $200-300 it probably has to be a Large Cent. Any other 1798 Draped Bust, including a dime, will be way more $$$.

You can get some really nice ancient coins in that price range.
Maybe now is the time to learn about this area of numismatics.
World renowned scholars have earned their pHd's in this area of research and collecting.

Ancient coins are part of America's distant numismatic heritage.

(Sorry for the diversion)

There are a lot of 1795 flowing hair cents in that price range on the bay. None of them are pretty, but some are better than others. A couple are slabbed at FR-2.

IMO nothing looks quite as nice as a flowing hair coin.

Stick with the large cents. In the $400 to $500 range the only thing you might find in silver would be a Half Dime and you would have to go down to around Fair-2 to get to that price. And the early silver is not even in the 7070.

You can still get a 1793 Wreath cent at that price. Mine came for under $400.

Thanks everyone. I think I will watch some pricing on the Large Cents - the Flowing Hair / Liberty Cap is an interesting idea. I saw a couple in the G4 or AG3 range that maybe I could afford.

I might wait until the Covid thing dies down (hopefully) and see what I can find at a show as well.
