So I got my milestone 100 post and was suggested I do a contest. Thanks to everyone in varieties for your patience with my posts and all my questions. I really have tried to learn.

So far I haven't found much, but I will send either a Lincoln Wheat cent minor lamination error coin or a Wheat cent BIE error coin to the winner at the beginning of August. Winners choice.

So my favorite Wheat cent re-punched mint mark variety coin has bronze disease. See link http://goccf.com/t/376392

My contest is -
Find a similar green copper coin. Take a photo. Treat the coin as best you know how. Take a photo of result of treatment. Post the pictures with directions of procedure to this contest.

Maybe we will all learn what can and can't be done. I'll choose a winner (subjective I know, but its my contest, LOL).

OK, I have 2 cents (no pun intended) to show:
1. 1950-D LWC with green horrendous damage:

2. 1949 LWC with green grass/dirt? Probably buried at one point:

I'm going to try cleaning it with coca cola and show you the results tomorrow.

RESULTS:

I decided not to do thw 1949 LWC cuz there wasn't enough "green stuff"

Thanks for this thread and congrats on your milestone! The coke did one heck of a difference. Most of the damage is part of the metal and can't be taken off, but everything else was gone. Wish me luck!

Coinhunter21, I wonder if its the carbonic acid (what give it bubbles) or the phosphoric acid that works on the copper chlorides. Be interesting to see if basic seltzer water does the same. I have one of the soda streams, so maybe I'll try that and post the results to compare.

SilverCents, that must have be some very careful scrubbing.

People please keep and posting.

Cola actually follows that stereotypical "acid" comment because of the carbonic acid. Pretty sure that's what caused it. I'm surprised how quickly it took effect though. I would think it would take at least a few days to cause such corrosion.

It was indeed, very difficult to get in between the columns.

SC nailed it. The carbonic acid causes the chemical reaction to remove the corrosion. It takes 12 hours to complete.

Here is one of my conservation projects I did about four years ago, 1909 VDB DDO-002, FS-1102. I applied a few drops of Verdi-Care then used a soft cactus needle to work the grime and debris loose. Took a while but it was worth it.

Thanks for that. A catcus needle? Wow. Still looks nice. Is that a DDO or just MD?
