Have been looking at getting some mint sets and proof sets to fill some date gaps in my collection and was wondering if counterfeit coin sets are as prevalent as individual collectible coins. My suspicions were raised further while looking at filling some gaps in my Malaysian collection including 1980 and 1981 proofs. I looked on E-Bay and saw one for ~$600AU from Canada and then a second one for $1200 AU from China. I don't trust and will never buy coins from China so have my suspicions however the seller has a feedback of 37000 with 100%.

Not that I intend to fork out that kind of money but would love to know how common fake mint sets are and how can one tell? You can't ask them to break them open and take better pics or weigh the coins.

It's too bad that there are so many fake coins made from China, so its tough for some legitimate dealers there to make honest deals, even if the coins are authentic, everyone still doubt it. There's also problems with item shipping oversea with mail delivering to anyone, especially now that the China/US relationship are at the lowest point.

Your best bet would stay away from any coins or sets from China no mater what the price is . We here too many things about their fakes , why even take a chance .

however I know that Chinese counterfeit coins are being flogged outside of China so was wondering if the same thing has been happening with mint sets. Is a mint set bought outside China going genuine? I doubt it but would like to know how prevalent the issue of counterfeit mint sets is outside of China if anyone has any experience or has been duped.
