Hi Everyone, New member, Martin, in the SW of the UK. Been a numismatic for years and have lived for many years in the USA. If anyone can give me a clue on this coin pictured, I would appreciate it. It is in poor condition but I suspect it may be very old. Any ideas?

@brit, first welcome to CCF. Second, this coin looks Byzantine to me. If you can post a pic of the other side, we can help narrow down what you have. At that point, I might move your thread over to the ancients subforum so that we can get some expert opinions.

Welcome to the Forum. You've come to a phenomenal place to share and learn.

Good call on Byzantine Spence. On Numista I filtered "K" under Byzantine coins and there are several that are very similar. Coinoscope came up with nil.

Wow you guys are good, Byzantine it is. looks to be from the 500s. Here are a couple of picture of the other side but not sure they will help much as it is in very poor condition. I have always been advised never to clean a coin in case I damage it, but I wonder what may be visible if cleaned.

Because of the wear I can't be certain, but my best guess is that it is a half follis of the emperor Justinian I.
