Given the profusion of die scratches on the reverse, the most prosaic and most likely explanation is that the "spike" extending vertically through Lincoln's statue is simply a very strong, well-placed die scratch.

Thank you Mr. Mike. I will for sure be keeping this one in a 2x2. I think I'm going to go with "Impaled Lincoln" on the holder.
