Or perhaps elsewhere. Spent an hour or so trawling through my China & japan books to find this to no avail- where does this hail from?

Chinese.
I believe it's called a "cash coin".
There are LOTS of varieties so unless you can translate the characters OR have a specialized catalog, ID'ing it specifically is is not possible.
There are those around who can probably do it for you.
Just have to wait until one shows up.
Describe it as if there were no picture.
Picture it as if there were no description.

Definitely a cash coin, the 'general currency' (right to left characters) confirms it for me, how I do not recognize the emperors name (the top to bottom characters). I'm not an expert so take this with a grain of salt, someone with more knowledge can probably give you more specific details.

Found it - late 1800's Vietnamese Cash Coin. Thanh Thai 1888-1907

Note to self... if you've spent 30 mins in a Chinese Cash catalogue and can't find it, try Annam/Vietnam!

Well I'll be, I would have almost put money on it being Chinese. Goes to show what I know, huh lol.

Good work finding it
