PCGS - Barbados, a nation whose name means "bearded ones" in Portuguese, is an island in the Caribbean with an area the size of New Orleans and an estimated population of 294,560. The island was claimed by the Spanish Crown in the late 15th century and later by the Portuguese Empire in the 16th century. However, it was abandoned by the time the English permanently settled there in 1627. In 1966, Barbados gained full independence from the United Kingdom, however they opted to remain in the British Commonwealth with Queen Elizabeth II as monarch. The capital of Barbados is Bridgetown. The first banknotes from Barbados were denominated in Pounds, but shortly thereafter they switched to the Dollar system, which they continue using today.
