Ceylon 5 rupee note dated 2 October 1939.

Two post office date stamps on back (1941 perhaps brought back by a military personnel). Some rust.

Does the 2 stamps on the back make it more desirable or less desirable, and do the stamps increase or decrease the value?

TIA

It's P-23c (the last issue without the king's portrait) & BV for Good is $20 to $60 for Fine.

Stamps are seen on the image posted by the SCWPM (Krause's paper money catalogue) so I think they were probably pretty commonly applied back then. IMO: Stamps would not make them any more desirable (but the lack of stamps might add desirability IF stamping was so common (which appears to be the case).

Bas S Warwick. I have been collecting Ceylon paper money for quite a few years and have extensive knowledge of the issues.

You have a 5 Rupee note issued by the Government of Ceylon. It is from the 1925-1939 Elephant on Back Issue printed by Thomas De La Rue & Co. Limited, London, England. Krause Pick 23a(1). I use (1) and (2) because there are two types. The 1 has a straight left edge and was issued as individual notes. The 2 has a perforated left edge (like a postage stamp) and was issued in a booklet. The date is 2nd October 1939. Signed by Harold James Huxham, and Guy Stanley Wodeman.

The stamps on the back make the note less valuable. PMG and PCGS will note it on the holder as "ink" The notes were stamped when they were used at payment at different businesses. Kayts is small island off the coast of Jaffna Peninsula in the North of Ceylon. Usually the city is stamped with the date and the business

The Krause catalog is a bit under in value. This note would sell for around 100 USD in the condition it's in.

It is a nice Pre World War 2 note and quite desirable.

@Sharebear

Thank you Sharebear for your very informative post. Its greatly appreciated.

I notice ebay have them available at much higher prices with one sold on best offer in July 2020 (originally asking $322)

Currently a Ceylon 2 Rupees 1935-6-26 XF+ Pick 21b on offer at $660 which seems high.

Anyway I feel $90 is OK for the purchase based on your figures.
