I've had this Tientsin branch red 10 Yuan of the Bank of Communications for several years. It's only now (I'm researching an article on the complex 1914 series) that I've realised the significance of it: this color and branch name doesn't appear in the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money, or Smith & Matravers or any Chinese catalogs that I've seen - and I've yet to find another online. Has anyone seen another?

There's certainly going to be more than one of these out there, it's not unusual for some cities to be unlisted in the catalogs. I've got another type from Paoting, not listed anywhere I can find.

xavierz27, looks similar to P118 t2; SCWPM General Issues 1368-1960, page 250.

Thank you for the replies.
It's the same signature type as the catalog example but not the same color. The only thing I can think of is that the red version was issued after the cataloged purple type, but few survive because of the Japanese occupation of Tientsin/Tianjin from mid 1937. That's when they started pushing their own puppet currency, and by 1940 banned Nationalist currency altogether.
I wrote to the SCWPM pointing out this unlisted type but (no surprise) there's no response.

The SCWPM responded! The information is being passed to the catalog editors.

An example is on ebay as: China (P118t1) 10 Yuan 1914 aF/VG+ TIENTSIN - sold by Hanes159 (finishing in 6 hours) Apparently it's the second example he has had. The SCWPM code Hanes159 has used is for the relatively more common purple version. Plus, (Techwriter) I never had any further response from the SCWPM regarding this note, so time will tell if they update the next issue of the catalog.

I collect this series and just picked up one of these red Tientsin 10's a few days ago. You don't see them for sale often, but they are not very expensive. I've never seen one in good shape. I didn't realize it wasn't in the catalog. Tientsin notes, for some of the denominations, seem to be the most common after Shanghai.
Can you show us the article that you ended up writing?
paxbrit, can you show us the Paoting note? I haven't seen one from that location (and don't know where it is!)
