How do these two coins vary? I see that pricing books differentiate them but I can't for the life of me find a good explanation of the differences in any books I own. Can someone help or point me to a better reference?

I think you'll find everything you need here. This link will help you identify any of the 450 varieties of the capped bust half dollar Dollars.

In a nutshell, the letters are visibly larger on the "Large Letter" variety when compared to those on the "Small Letter" variety.

Thanks Bonedigger, that site has loads of information but at such a hight level I can't understand it. It is like reading a calculus book when I need an addition primer. Is there a more basic resource that explains how to tell between a large and small letter variety? After that I can maybe start figuring out the Overton part.

Here are some 1832s with Large Letters on the reverse (UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.)

All of the other varieties (O-102 thru O-123) have the smaller (UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.)

Can you post a link or picture of your coin and I'll bet someone here could identify the variety for you?

Take Care

Thanks again Bonedigger, those photos helped. It looks like the A in States is one of the bigger differences. It appears I have a large letter. I may post it later on to be verified by one of the experts. I am guessing the grade to be EF-40.

It helps me not to think of them as different sizes ( which they are of course) but close spacing (large letters ), wide spacing ( small letters) variety.

Texas:
It just takes a bit of practice, and you can learn to 'speak' Overton.
