I spend a lot of time tinkering with worn, dateless Buffalo nickels trying to bring out the date and other details. Here is a recent find. Please let me know if you think I may have found an 18/7-D overdate. Yes, I know that the coin is really in bad shape. I took over twenty photos from various angles and in various lighting conditions and these two are the best I can offer. The coin is too worn to spot some of the other markers, like the die crack by the braid or a distorted F monogram. The reverse is slightly rotated versus the obverse, maybe 10 or 15 degrees. (And although it's not shown here, TRUST ME, there is a D mint mark on the reverse!) Thanks!

. Last number is too rounded. The 18/7-D has a "flat" top on the 8 where the 7 is underneath. I also restore buffalos and have yet to find one. Keep looking and good luck!

Vermontensium - Actually, the top of the 8 IS pretty flat, I guess the photos just don't do it justice. Over the last 4 years I have found 9 of these while restoring dateless Buffalo nickels, and all of them were easily recognizable as overdates. This particular coin is just so worn out and in such poor condition that there just wasn't enough material there for me to bring it, conclusively, all the way back. A lot of folks on this forum are pretty enamored of what vinegar can do for a dateless nickel so maybe I'll plop it into some vinegar for a few weeks to see it it helps it any.
