On Yahoo news a man in New Jersey tried to pay a ticket with rolled cent's. He finally convinced the court house that the coins were "cash", which they accept as payment, but he had to write his drivers license number on each roll. He also now has a warrant out on him.

I can't add a link as it is a video. Maybe someone else here knows how to do that.

Well as much as I hate "the man" LOL, he is kind of <<edited by Staff>>. But still, I dont think it deserves a warrent for an unpaid ticket, when he did infact try to pay. its not his fault the payment instructions where not specific enough. It will be interesting to see what the outcome of the court hearing is.

I can gaurentee one thing thought, I bet the courthouse where he tryed to pay the ticket will be putting up a sign saying no pennies.

I don't know what to think about this. The guy went to the bank and deliberately got $56 in cents. I guess if he felt he didn't deserve the ticket then that would be a good way to stick it to "the man" but I probably would have chose the dollar coins instead.

This seems to run contrary to the concept of pennies as legal tender. Isn't all American currency legal tender for all debts, public and private? Just for that, I should pay my income taxes in pennies (after I take all the wheats out of course)

You beat me to it! If the hypothetical sign said "PENNIES" I would go there, pay with CENTS, and wait for the mayhem!

I see this one as a bit different from the random "I'm gonna fight The Man by paying in cents" guy, those types usually have a bucket of loose cents that cannot be easily counted. This guy actually got bank boxes with rolled coins so it would be no problem to count them and the local reporter for this story went to the courthouse and saw a sign posted by the cashier window that stated "Cash Is Accepted".

When I was younger I paid a $25.00 parking ticket with rolls of cents. The woman laughed and took the money.

Pennies are the coppery coins I spend, cents are the coppery coins I collect. To the uneducated they would appear to be very similar.

a Penny is a British denomination, a Cent is a US denomination. The US has never made a Penny so if anyone here collects Pennies they collect British coins not US coins. I think its funny that all the Large cents are almost always called Cents but as soon as they get smaller in size they are automatically called Pennies even though the name on the coin stayed the same

In Denmark we have a coin law that says "No one is obliged to accept, in one payment, more than 25 coins of each denomination" - roughly translated.
Perhaps they have met this guy?

This kid's parents must be real proud. He got caught doing something wrong. He should man up and pay his fine without being a nuisance to town/city clerk. If I were the judge I would make this clown count out every last cent of his payment in front of the bailiff. That would certainly knock the smarmy smile off of his face.
