Hello! I'm new to this and found this penny while I was doing a science experiment to clean pennies with my son. I know this at the l in Liberty was missing. It's possible that it's just a circulation blemish, but I was curious to know if it could be an error. It's in bad shape so I doubt the coin would be worth anything, but it would be a neat family heirloom either way. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Badly damaged and cleaned coin with a slight die mis-alignment. Spender.

Damage to the rim there has just displaced some of the metal and covered up the L.
Definitely be careful about cleaning coins. There's nothing wrong with messing around with pocket change like this, but it's considered a form of damage and would have ruined any value if this was an error.

with the statement about cleaning. Generally it should not be done.

As for this coin, a lot of damage, nothing that the mint had inflicted to it. The missing mint mark denotes a Philadelphia min coin.
Collecting since 1972. Learning from then on
