Just wondering why some coins have letters under the year.
In this case an S.

The mint mark legend indicates the location of the mint. S = San Francisco, D = Denver, no mint mark (or sometimes P) = Philadelphia.

Lincoln cents with 'no mint mark' are minted in Philadelphia. Only exception is in 2017 when Philly cents did carry the P mintmark. And don't forget W for West Point--limited runs.

Just so you know, on certain other denominations of that era, the mint mark was not near the date, instead it was on the other side of the coin.
