I just read about an email from NGC. They will begin awarding points to Registry coins based on their CAC status:

"Starting May 19, CAC coins can be entered into NGC Registry sets by simply using the Add Coin function, just like for any other coin. A set can have a mix of CAC coins and other coins. To distinguish CAC coins, a green or gold CAC icon will be displayed beside the coin's grade.

John Albanese, Founder and President of CAC, commented: "The NGC Registry helps collectors and dealers by offering an inclusive platform where they can organize and display all of their coins. NGC and CAC worked together to make the process of adding CAC coins to the NGC Registry as easy as possible, and I think collectors will be very pleased with the results."

NGC Registry set categories have slots for each coin needed to complete the set. When a user adds a coin to a slot, it receives a point score based on its grade, relative rarity and value. When it comes to scoring CAC coins, those with a green CAC sticker will receive a premium above the grade's base score, and coins with a gold CAC sticker will receive an even higher score
."

I strongly believe this will lead to a slightly greater demand, and as a result, an even larger price differential for coins with CAC's compared to coins without CAC's!

Couldn't agree more.

I am a bit weary about this change. I can see the argument that if specifications like DCAM, RD, PL and whatnot earn more 'points' that having the bean should count too. But those are all inherent to the coin, a CAC bean is technically inherent to a slab. (without a slab, a coin is still DCAM or RD or PL. without a slab a coin is never CAC'd)

But, as a double edge sword, this is sort of NGC twisting your arm behind your back and saying "Spend more money on TPG submissions!!!" by rewarding those with coins that not only passed NGC's eyes, but CAC's too

Without a doubt.

I will say, even though I'm not really a fan of NGC grading for the most part I vastly prefer their registry. It's easier to navigate, the UI is generally better, and the fact you can use both PCGS and NGC coins is a massive plus.

That's already happened, since we've had a "two-tier" market for the past few years. AS A GENERALIZATION, coins with CAC's have genrally held their own in price or increased a bit, where coins without CAC's have generally not performed as well.

But yes, if the pricing differential increases slightly due to slightly higher demand for coins with CAC's, then one would expect either a very slight price decrease in coins without CAC's, or just not rising quite as much as they otherwise would.

CAC will be happy to see the extra business.
But I think becoming a CAC member is almost impossible at this time.

1. CAC makes very little from their service of examining coins for CAC's. Most of their profit comes from them making a wholesale market in CAC coins.

2. Not true. As a collector, you can apply to be a Collector Submitter, and from what I hear, it takes only a month or two to get approved!!!! But if you're interested, don't snooze, as this recent announcement will liklely increase the number of collectors applying to be Collector Submitters with CAC!

I just can not find myself buying into the grading of the grader. I simply pass on coins bearing a sticker if the price exceeds a like-wise non-beaner based on my personal eye appeal and not that of others. Which is all CAC is. As for NGC now adding it, doesn't that go against their star designation? Same thing.

FYI, I submitted my CAC Collector Submitter application on April 12, and it was approved on May 11. According to the email I received, I should receive my Welcome Kit in mid-June, but that's dependent on the current waitlist and how quickly they're processed.

As mentioned upthread CAC is accepting, though they are rather strict in who they accept. I got in with the last batch of acceptations a year ago, and my member number is in the low 2000s, given how popular they are, with only a bit over 2000 authorized submitters...

It's not quite the same. A star designation is based on exceptional eye appeal, and doesn't take into consideration whether a coin is in the low, mid or high range for the assigned grade. The green bean indicates the CAC opinion that a coin is solid or premium for the grade, so a lower-end (for the grade) coin with a star designation shouldn't get the green bean. Well, at least in theory...
