I doubt this is real, someone gave this to me and a few other weird coins desperate for gas. How can I tell if this is real or not?

It looks like a fake. Weigh it and you will see. Genuine coin is 27grams.

It looks like it has a reeded edge. I don't think reeded came around until the 1830s or something. Did they?

As far as I know...no Draped Bust dollars were reeded, nor were they struck in a collar--please correct me if that's not true.

Although the OP is a fake, the link above shows a reeded edge.

"the link above shows a reeded edge....where?
I read: Edge: Lettered - HUNDRED CENTS ONE DOLLAR OR UNIT, ornaments between words vary
Draped Bust were struck to 1804, all out of collar (ie no reeding possible).

I think Bherring was seeing the design as a reeded edge. While the real thing has edge lettering, the posters coin I think really does have a reeded edge from the photos.

As for authenticity, if it has a reeded edge, it's a no brainer, and it's a fake. If it does not have a reeded edge, I would at least start by weighing it. Also, if you can get some clearer pictures and a little closer, we will be able to tell with more certainty. Baseline looking at this thing really shows decent design and attention to detail for a forgery compared to some we have seen.

Welcome to the forum!

The odds are that the coin in question is not real. If real, that would be an extremely rare and valuable dollar. There are probably over 1000 fakes of that design out there for every real example, so the odds are not good.

I'd still weigh it and compare it with pictures of real examples, but I agree with the previous opinions. Don't get your hopes up.

Start with the reeded edge. The only 1796 silver coins with a reeded edge were the Half Dime, dime, and quarter. If this is dollar size it IS a fake, no if's, and's, or but's.
