1965 Quarter Missing Cladding. Advice?

jason39305 Pillar of the Community United States 754 Posts	Posted 08/20/2022 12:27 pm I found this quarter a while ago I belive CRH and forgot about it. I found it again and want some advice about it. It appears to be missing all the cladding. The edges are fully reeded with no evidence of cladding. The obverse and reverse are copper in color with the round marks showing where roll crimping might have occurred also showing copper. Any advice would be appreciated. It looks to me that the cladding may have been worn down in the high spots to the copper core. but I can still see some of the silvery color of the cladding elsewhere. Collecting since 1972. Yokozuna Pillar of the Community United States 4618 Posts	Posted 08/20/2022 1:42 pm This looks like toning, not a missing clad error. A coin with both clad layers is almost impossibly rare. Only a few have been certified. It would also be about 2 grams underweight unless the planchet was punched from a solid copper sheet rolled to the correct thickness of 1.75mm. Missing clad usually causes some weakness of detail in the strike. This is caused by the too thin planchet being struck with the correct die gap set for a normal full thickness planchet. I was looking at the quarter again closely and I could see areas where they cladding was still there, especially on the rims. I also looked online and it appears you can remove the cladding layer with some chemical reaction. Maybe that was done to this quarter? Report this Post to the Staff
